Supermarket Cyclone
Take a stroll into your local supermarket and you will inevitably
be sucked into the processed food “black hole” that permeates the center of the store. The
more you get away from the outer walls and venture toward the inner bowels of the store, the more processed the food gets.
Most supermarkets open toward inviting fruits, vegetable, and deli departments that offer healthy food alternatives.
As you naturally stroll down the aisles, the food goes from healthy to highly processed. Fresh fruit
is replaced by Fruit Loops, whole grains are replaced by ‘enriched flour”, fresh meats are replaced by cans of
Spam. The varieties in these aisles are endless, with catchy marketing and glorious packaging.
The more time we spend in these aisles, the more attractive these convenient food options look. At
some point, they literally start jumping into our shopping cart. How can we avoid this “black hole”?
Do the bulk of your shopping along the outside walls, focusing on fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, fresh
meats and fish, and whole grain pastas and breads. The less packaging and labels your food has, the healthier it will be for
you.
